The Growing Poem

It used to be a simple world,
Before the machines, comfort was a meal,
Shelter from the rain,
All of nature had a song,
And we took our share and sang with them,
We valued the world, in the First Age,
Long before our memories,
Were buried beneath the Sea,
Lonf forgotten, and long hidden,
By the Guardians of the Track.

Sniff the air and allow yourself to dream,
That which is real,
If you can find a place in a small corner,
In some land, which reaches close in your mind,
If you let the veil down it is possible to see,
Another time of reverie,
A brief moment in the Universe,
A master of your destiny,
Without trappings of wealth, but also without
Those who bring the terror.

Here I sit, another day of madness,
Another day in chains,
The Bridge in the distance,
Held by hidden forces, a prison of secrets
All that holds me is lies, between myself and home
This madness and illusion, these dungeon of falsity,
The other day, I saw a man
Briefly marking his time in a void,Making converssation with that,
Which isn't really there,
Playing the game, reality as a trance.

How do you wake a man, who is always asleep?
Who dreams what all others dream,
Who desends into madness as he desends to death,
Only to do it all again,
Over and over, this is Hell, right here, right now.
And we descended long ago.

When you sat by fire, in the dead of night,
After the hunt, eating the clean meat,
Breathing the clean air,
Dreaming of a life past thirty,
Dreaming of a life with the hunted,
Life without toiling to eat, without then challenge,
Did you concieve of this descent to the artificial,
This illusion made by smiling men,
This technocrat who rules your life,
Did you dream of this slavery?

Space Opera has come, and we did not see
Our world descending into such debauchery,
Godless replacing our Gods and becoming Gods,
Without a spirit to their names.
Seducing us with their sensual arts,
Confusing us with hypnotic tools,
Showing us the spectre of losing all,
And perishing in our weakness.

Sometimes I see hidden,
A beauty that can be,
You talk to me with your eyes,
And thoughts forbidden by social graces.
Can I ever tell you, sometime down the track,
The bitterness I feel with these hidden words
So I am lost among the lonely,
Adrift without food,
Searching across the emptiness
For signs of life.
